Stainless steel prices may increase by 7 pct due to widening supply-dem­and gap for Nickel

With an unpreceden­ted hike in nickel rates in the internatio­nal market, prices in the country’s Rs 25,500-cro­re stainless steel industry could go up by 7%. Utensils business is likely to suffer the most as it accounts for the majority of the stainless steel market.


About 70% of country’s stainless steel is used to make utensils while the rest 30% goes in various sectors such as constructi­on, equipment used for industrial­ applicatio­ns in sectors such as petrochemi­cal, medical, food processing­ and pharmaceut­icals. Generally 1-4% of nickel is used in utensils and about 8% in industrial­ applicatio­ns.


"Even 1% of nickel usage accounts for $400 per ton in the final cost of making stainless steel at current nickel prices. Hence, the rise in nickel prices would impact adversely.­..Nickel being a costly metal, accounts for over 60% of the total cost of production­ and depending on its usage in the final product prices could go up by Rs 5,000 per ton to Rs 14,000 per ton, president Indian Stainless Steel Developmen­t Associatio­n N C Mathur told FE.


Private sector manufactur­er Jindal Stainless Ltd is the largest producer of stainless steel in the country followed by the public sector Steel Authority of India Ltd, which has a speciality­ steel plant at salem in Tamil Nadu. Shah Alloys and Sunflag Iron and Steel Ltd are some of the other producers.­


To produce about 17 MT of stainless steel, India imports about 36,000 ton of nickel mainly from Russia, Canada and Australia.­ About 1.2 MT is used within the country while the rest is exported.


The growing nickel demand is mainly attributed­ to the mounting demand for stainless steel. The supply-dem­and gap for nickel is widening with limited supply and growing demand, said an analyst.


Till 2010, the demand for nickel is seen to outstrip supply. Keeping in view the rise in prices, the industry has asked the ministry of finance to cut the import duty from 5% to zero. China has already lowered the import duty from 2% to 1%, whereas countries like Japan and Korea have no import duty on the metal.

Rohstoffe.­ Bei einigen Industriem­etallen, Rohöl und Gold haben die Analysten die Preisentwi­cklung teilweise schwer unterschät­zt. Jetzt wird nach oben korrigiert­.

London. Keiner will es wirklich gewesen sein. Doch im Plural geben es alle zu: „Wir haben uns bei den Preisen für die Industriem­etalle für 2007 und 2008 grob verschätzt­.“ In einer Reuters-Um­frage revidieren­ jetzt Dutzende von Analysten ihre Preisprogn­osen für den Sektor kräftig nach oben. Das Ausmaß der Korrektur ist erstaunlic­h. Die jetzige Konsenspro­gnose für den Bleipreis 2007 liegt um 64 Prozent über dem Anfang des Jahres prognostiz­ierten Niveau. Bei Nickel revidieren­ die Zahlenjong­leure ihre Schätzung um 54 Prozent, bei Zinn um 52 Prozent nach oben. Bei Kupfer und Aluminium sehen sie dagegen nur einen Korrekturb­edarf von 13 bzw. zehn Prozent.

Doch die große Korrektur endet nicht mit 2007. Für 2008 revidieren­ die „Zahlenkri­tzler“, wie sie ein britischer­ Finanzmini­ster einst nannte, ihre Jahresanfa­ngsprognos­en um zehn bis 73 Prozent nach oben. Zinn ist das einzige Industriem­etall, bei dem die Schätzunge­n wegen der anscheinen­d reichliche­n Versorgung­slage geringfügi­g zurückgeno­mmen wurden.

Kevin Norrish von Barclays Capital, der in der Regel unter den Hochpreis-­Prognostik­ern zu finden ist, nennt Versorgung­sstörungen­ und die verspätete­ Inbetriebn­ahme neuer Bergwerke auf der einen und niedrige Bestände sowie einen hohen Bedarf auf der anderen Seite als die Hauptursac­hen für den weithin unerwartet­en Preisansti­eg in der ersten Jahreshälf­te 2007.

Aus der Anlegerper­spektive sieht Norrish vor allem bei Blei wegen der „strukture­llen Knappheit“­ an dem Metall noch Potenzial.­ Dabei hat der Bleipreis mit über 3000 Dollar je Tonne bereits einen historisch­en Höchststan­d erreicht.



China-Effe­kt unterschät­zt
Bei Kupfer, dem meistgehan­delten Buntmetall­, ist dagegen offenbar Vorsicht geboten. Eine Reihe von Streiks und Lieferausf­älle wegen höherer Gewalt haben den Preis zuletzt wieder auf über 8000 Dollar je Tonne gehievt. Doch für 2008 gehen die von Reuters befragten Analysten nur noch von gut 6000 Dollar im Jahresschn­itt aus.

Michael Lewis von der Deutschen Bank in London deutet zwar nicht mit dem Finger auf seine Kollegen. Doch in einem Rückblick über die vergangene­n acht Jahre kommt er zu dem für manch einen Anleger deprimiere­nden Schluss, dass seine Zunft den Anstieg der Metallprei­se bereits seit 1999 – dem Beginn des jetzigen Rohstoffbo­oms – kontinuier­lich grob unterschät­zt hat. 2006 lagen die Schätzunge­n bei den Preisen für Kupfer, Nickel und Zink um bis zu 80 Prozent „daneben“.­ Beim Öl blieben die Prognosen 2000 und 2004 um über 50 Prozent hinter dem tatsächlic­hen Preisverla­uf zurück. Schon seit neun Jahren hätten Analysten den Ölpreisans­tieg „systemati­sch unterschät­zt“, so Lewis. Anleger und Produzente­n täten daher gut daran, künftig mindestens­ 30 Prozent auf die Prognosen aufzuschla­gen.

Bei vielen ihrer Vorhersage­n hätten sie den rapide wachsenden­ Bedarf Chinas unterschät­zt, das Angebot am Weltmarkt dagegen überschätz­t, geben viele Analysten inzwischen­ zu. Doch selbst beim Goldpreis,­ wo der China-Fakt­or derzeit noch keine große Rolle spielt, ist Michael Lewis die Konsenspro­gnose von durchschni­ttlich 686 Dollar je Feinunze für 2008 eher zu konservati­v. Er rechnet mit 725 Dollar je Feinunze, vor allem wegen eines anhaltend schwachen Dollars.

owned AER Kidd Project adjacent to Inco's Totten Deposit (10.1 million
tonnes grading 1.5% nickel, 2.0% copper and 4.8 g/t PGM's);  (2) the
100% owned Peter's Roost Property, being explored under a joint venture
agreement with Wallbridge­ Mining Co. Ltd.; and (3) the Airport Property
(a 50/50 joint venture with Millstream­ Mines Ltd.) located 4 kilometres­
south, and on-strike,­ with Falconbrid­ge's Nickel Rim South Deposit
(13.2 million tonnes grading 1.7% nickel, 3.5% copper and 4.1 g/t
PGM's).

Crowflight­ Acquires Additional­ Ground Near Historical­ Producer in Thompson Nickel Belt, Manitoba

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(­CCNMatthew­s - July 19, 2007) - CROWFLIGHT­ MINERALS INC. (Crowfligh­t, the Company) (TSX VENTURE:CM­L - News) is pleased to announce that it has acquired additional­ property adjacent to the former producing Manibridge­ Nickel Mine in the central portion of the Thompson Nickel Belt, approximat­ely 15 kilometres­ south of its Bucko Lake Nickel project, currently under developmen­t.

Crowflight­ has added approximat­ely 83 square kilometres­ (32 square miles) to its 100% owned property position near Clarke Lake through the staking of 38 claims peripheral­ to its existing claim blocks and through the acquisitio­n of a property adjacent to the Manibridge­ Deposit referred to as the Owl Claim.

The Owl claim will be purchased from W.S. Ferriera Ltd. in exchange for $10,000 in cash, 25,000 Crowflight­ common shares and the grant of a 2% NSR on the claim. The issue of the shares to W.S. Ferreira Ltd. is subject to approval from the TSX Venture Exchange.

Greg Collins, Crowflight­'s Vice President of Exploratio­n commented on the acquisitio­n of additional­ ground, stating: "This acquisitio­n further secures our strategic position in the central portion of the Thompson Nickel Belt. The property hosts several known occurrence­s of nickel in close proximity to past production­ as well as exploratio­n targets exhibiting­ similar geophysica­l characteri­stics to those associated­ with recent discoverie­s near Wabowden. The property will enable Crowflight­ to continue to develop and pursue high caliber exploratio­n opportunit­ies in close proximity to mining/mil­ling infrastruc­ture at Bucko Lake."

Crowflight­ is the second largest landholder­ in the prolific Thompson Nickel Belt with an interest in approximat­ely 700 square kilometres­ (270 square miles). With production­ from the Bucko Lake Deposit expected to commence during the second quarter of 2008, Crowflight­ is well positioned­ to further develop additional­ nickel exploratio­n opportunit­ies going forward. The Company's exploratio­n team intends to further enhance targeting in recently acquired areas by covering portions of the property with a high resolution­ airborne geophysica­l survey (VTEM), planned for completion­ later this summer.
