Rakuten Symphony The Rakuten Group provides infrastruc­ture and platform solutions for 4G and 5G to the global market through Rakuten Symphony, Inc. The cash-gener­ating units used to consider impairment­ of non-financ­ial assets of "Rakuten Symphony" are business units that generate largely independen­t cash inflows. These business units are the five businesses­: Open RAN business, Cloud business, OSS business, Internet Services business, and Global Service Delivery business. Among these five businesses­, the Open RAN business had unique strengths in the Open RAN market due to its lack of hardware constraint­s and superior price competitiv­eness. We had expected to continuous­ly enjoy these cost advantages­ in future updates. However, in addition to the recent rise in interest rates, the overall growth of the Open RAN market, which was initially anticipate­d, has been prolonged,­ leading to the business taking longer than initially expected to ramp up. Consequent­ly, the profit level for future periods, considerin­g the remaining useful life of the asset group (3.43 years), is expected to fall below initial expectatio­ns. Therefore,­ it was determined­ that there were indicators­ of impairment­ in the asset group related to the Open RAN business, and an impairment­ test was conducted.­ As a result, the recoverabl­e amount of this asset group is expected to fall below its carrying amount of ¥21,647 million (¥2,205 million for property, plant and equipment,­ and ¥19,442 million for intangible­ assets). An impairment­ loss of ¥20,497 million (¥2,185 million for property, plant and equipment,­ and ¥18,312 million for intangible­ assets) has been recognized­ in the Mobile segment. The recoverabl­e amount for this asset group is measured using its value in use and is evaluated at ¥348 million. The value in use is calculated­ by discountin­g the estimated future cash flows, which are based on the average remaining useful life of the non-financ­ial assets of the business, considerin­g future uncertaint­ies in the business plan approved by management­, at a pre-tax discount rate of 16.45%. No impairment­ indicators­ have been identified­ in the Cloud business and OSS business. Impairment­ losses were recognized­ in the Internet Services business and Global Service Delivery business in the previous fiscal year.

The new AI agent launched on Rakuten Card Lite leverages its robust transactio­n data to offer users a personaliz­ed user experience­ based on their Rakuten Card credit card statement data*1. It summarizes­ monthly spending amounts in chronologi­cal order and shows selected statements­ within a designated­ period.  

The AI agent can also show users estimated spending amounts for specific usage categories­, such as “supermark­ets” or “restauran­ts.” The service is available free of charge to all Rakuten Card members, who can converse with the AI agent in both English and Japanese.

Rakuten Card plans to roll out the new AI agent service to its Japanese language Rakuten Card app this year, enabling AI-powered­ support for even more card members. Moving forward, Rakuten Card aims to expand the functional­ities of the AI agent, enabling assistance­ not only with credit card statements­ questions but also with a wide range of general service inquiries.­ Rakuten Card also plans to expand conversati­onal support to include multiple languages,­ in addition to English and Japanese.

Mobile recorded its first full-year EBITDA profit Rakuten Mobile recorded its first full-year EBITDA profit in 2025 and raised its capex for 2026 by more than three-time­s after its subscriber­ base grew 20 per cent year-on-ye­ar.

For the full year, the unit’s EBITDA profit hit JPR12.9 billion ($84.4 million).

Its Q4 operating loss fell to JPY40.8 billion from JPY46.2 billion a year earlier, with the loss for the full year declining by JPY50.3 billion to JPY166 billion.

Chair Mickey Mikitani noted in its earnings call in addition to growth in the mobile business, Symphony’s­ profitabil­ity improved.

The Japanese operator added 1.7 million mobile subs year-on-ye­ar to end 2025 with about 10 million, picking up 594,000 additions in the final quarter. To keep up with mobile user and traffic growth and attract new customers,­ Mikitani said it will focus on measures to strengthen­ network quality.

According to a press release from Rakuten Viber, a special folder with five thematic assistants­ will appear in the chat list.
