Operating Profit and Net Loss FY2025 Q3 Consolidated Financial Results

Media Q&A Session

Mr. Ono (Yomiuri Shimbun)

Firstly, regarding the September quarter, this is the first time in six years that you've achieved an operating profit. Mr. Mikitani, could you please share your frank impressions and, once again, the main reasons for this turnaround to profitability? My second point is that while operating profit has improved, the net loss remains at a similar level to the previous year. I would appreciate a more detailed explanation of this factor. It's unclear why the net loss hasn't decreased, despite the reversal of derivative valuation gains/losses in the third quarter. Could you please clarify this?

Mikitani (Rakuten Group CEO)
I feel that we have finally reached this point. There has been a significant reduction in the deficit of the mobile business, and we have already achieved EBITDA profitability. This has led to the creation of various synergies, and our e-commerce and financial businesses have also performed well overall. As one of the factors driving this fundamental change, I believe that various initiatives utilizing AI have contributed significantly. This includes cost reductions and improved efficiency in external advertising. Moving forward, we believe that accelerating these synergies and further leveraging data AI will be key. For the second question, Mr. Hirose will provide the answer.

Hirose (Rakuten Group CFO)
I understand that you are referring to the cumulative Q3 period. Firstly, both operating profit and pre-tax profit have certainly improved. Regarding quarterly profit, or quarterly profit attributable to owners of the parent, the primary factor is taxes. As you can see from the financial results brief, although the pre-tax quarterly loss has improved, corporate income tax expenses have expanded from 29 billion yen to 56 billion yen. As a result, the quarterly loss this year is 113.4 billion yen, compared to a loss of 127.1 billion yen in the previous year. In connection with this, regarding owners of the parent and non-
controlling interests, non-controlling interests have increased. Both these tax aspects and non-controlling interests have been impacted by Rakuten Card being excluded from consolidated taxation due to the 15% investment from Mizuho Group in December last year, which consequently led to an increase in so-called non-controlling interests. In any case, we will strive to further improve these areas by expanding the profitability of our businesses going forward.

About the profitability of Rakuten Mobile
Mr. Onishi (Freelance) Regarding achieving operating profitability for the first time in six years, Mr. Mikitani, compared to your initial assumptions when entering the mobile business, would you say you are on schedule, behind schedule, or ahead of schedule in reaching this point? Also, looking solely at Rakuten Mobile, while the deficit is shrinking, it continues to incur operating losses. How many more years do you anticipate it will take to achieve profitability?

Mikitani (Rakuten Group CEO) I believe we are mostly on schedule. However, compared to when we initially started, the business plan has changed somewhat, such as building our own nationwide network. On the other hand, I believe the synergies with the Rakuten Group have been even greater than we initially anticipated. Regarding Rakuten Mobile's overall profit and loss situation, this will largely depend on the speed at which we acquire customers. Even now, in terms of EBITDA, we are at 8 billion yen, and if we consider what we call pre-marketing cash flow, meaning assuming we don't need to spend on new acquisitions or marketing, we are already generating about 24 billion yen in EBITDA per quarter. So, it comes down to the speed of customer acquisition and this profit and loss calculation. While I cannot announce a specific timeline, I believe we can continue to acquire customers at our current cruising speed.

Grow at the same speed or even faster FY2025 Q3 Consolidated Financial Results

Analyst Q&A Session

Mr. Nagao (BofA Securities)
Thank you. This is Nagao from BofA Securities. I have two quick questions. The net increase in Rakuten Mobile subscribers is accelerating. Could you please explain the background of this acceleration? And though it might be a bit premature, what kind of net increase pace do you anticipate after reaching 10 million subscribers this fiscal year, particularly by the end of next year? My second question is, in Mr. Mikitani's presentation earlier, he mentioned that Rakuten Mobile's affordability is a competitive advantage amidst inflation. However, since it remains relatively inexpensive, what are your thoughts on a price increase? Those are my two points.

Mikitani (Rakuten Group CEO)
Regarding the net increase, other companies are also undertaking various initiatives, so we hope to grow at a pace that slightly accelerates our current speed. Meanwhile, our corporate sales, particularly expanding to small and medium-sized enterprises that we haven't targeted before, are progressing smoothly, and we recognize this. We are eager to reach the milestone of 10 million subscribers as soon as possible, and we aim to grow at the same speed or even faster next year compared to this year. For the second question about price increases, we plan to consider pricing by adding various optional services. However, given that we are still a challenger and the synergies are very significant, I believe that, despite some minor adjustments, we will likely continue with the current approach for the time being. That is all.

Rakuten mit operativer Wende Rakuten mit operativer Wende: Erstes positives Ergebnis seit Jahren

17. November 2025

Starke Segmente kompensieren Verluste

Bereinigte Kennzahlen zeigen klare Verbesserung

1&1 becomes world's largest Open RAN operator 1&1 becomes world's largest Open RAN operator

1&1 on Tuesday declared itself the largest Open RAN operator in the world having completed the migration of its 12 million mobile customers to its own network.

Mary Lennighan, Freelance writer

November 11, 2025

The German mobile operator made the announcement alongside the presentation of its third quarter results. While the numbers themselves are far from stellar, the network migration is an important milestone for 1&1, which has faced more hurdles than it expected in its Open RAN rollout.

It is also an important development from a regulatory perspective. 1&1 completed the migration at the beginning of November, it said, fulfilling a major requirement of its 5G licence. It picked up 5G frequencies in Germany's 2019 auction that came with a requirement to achieve competitive independence as the country's fourth mobile network operator by the end of this year.

How AI is Redefining the Telco's Core Identity Beyond the Hype: How AI is Redefining the Telco's Core Identity

By Puneet Handa

Executive Officer- Product and Strategy Rakuten Mobile

November 19, 2025

In the dynamic landscape of telecommunications, we often find ourselves caught between the promise of emerging technologies and the practicalities of deployment. My recent fireside chat with Marc Einstein, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, during the Rakuten Tech Conference 2025, exploring "The Future Telco in the AI Era," offered a moment for reflection – not just on what we've built at Rakuten Mobile, but on the profound shift AI is orchestrating across our entire industry.
It's clear that AI is more than just another tool; it is fundamentally reshaping the telco's identity, moving us from mere connectivity providers to architects of intelligent, self-aware networks.

For decades, our industry's narrative has been defined by the "G"s – 3G, 4G, 5G. Each generation brought new speeds, new capabilities. Yet, as Marc astutely observed, the current wave of excitement isn't about a new radio standard; it's about AI. This distinction is crucial. While 5G was built for speed, as I highlighted, 6G will be built for intelligence. This implies a fundamental re-architecture, where AI isn't an overlay, but an intrinsic part of the protocol stack itself.

At Rakuten Mobile, our "AI-first" and "software-first" philosophy is about more than efficiency; it has prepared us for this very future. It allowed us to shed the legacy constraints that often hinder traditional operators, enabling us to build a network designed for emergent intelligence, not just faster data pipes. This foresight has been instrumental in our journey to becoming EBITDA positive within a remarkably short time frame, demonstrating that strategic, AI-driven transformation can yield significant financial returns alongside technological leadership.

The journey from manual operations to full autonomy is a continuum. We've spoken for years about self-healing networks, but now, with advanced AI, this is becoming a tangible reality. Our current Level 3.5 maturity in network automation, with a clear path to Level 4, signifies a deeper engagement of AI. Consider the scale: we manage over 350,000 Open RAN cell sites with approximately 250 engineers: a feat that would require thousands at traditional operators. It's about agentic systems that don't just follow pre-programmed rules, but can intelligently predict, diagnose, and resolve issues autonomously.

Consider the impact: when a server in our data center experiences an anomaly, the network doesn't wait for human intervention. It self-heals, seamlessly rerouting workloads, ensuring continuous service. AI-first delivery cuts OPEX by 25-30% and reduces downtime by approximately 30%, translating directly to enhanced customer experience – fewer outages, more reliable connectivity – and profound operational efficiencies, allowing us to optimize our workforce and reduce costs. This isn't just about doing things faster; it's about doing things smarter, with a degree of resilience that was previously unattainable.

As we embrace this powerful technology, the "how" becomes as important as the "what." We discussed the implications of AI on our workforce, and I firmly believe that AI should be viewed as a co-pilot. Our "AI-nization" philosophy at Rakuten is about empowering our employees, equipping them with AI tools, and fostering a culture where human creativity is augmented by machine intelligence. This creates new opportunities, new roles, and a more dynamic, skilled workforce.

To illustrate our commitment at scale: over 15,000 Rakuten employees are actively using Rakuten AI daily, with token consumption growing 1,631% year-over-year. This isn't a pilot program - it's a cultural transformation where AI is becoming normalized across the organization.

Furthermore, the environmental imperative is undeniable. AI offers powerful solutions for sustainability. Our proprietary Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC) exemplifies this, dynamically optimizing network elements to achieve 15-20% energy savings, equivalent to charging around 100million smartphones monthly. This demonstrates that technological advancement and ecological responsibility can go hand-in-hand.

Looking forward, the convergence of AI with other transformative technologies paints a compelling picture.

Through physical AI, the network will increasingly extend its intelligence into the physical world, enabling autonomous systems like delivery robots and intelligent infrastructure. Our work with autonomous delivery and AI-optimized antenna tilts are early indicators of this trend.

As we’re extending connectivity to every corner, even challenging terrains, through Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) services, AI will be critical in managing the complexity and optimizing performance of these hybrid networks.

Looking further into the future, quantum computing, while still nascent, holds the promise of unlocking true AI capabilities that could solve problems currently beyond our reach, from advanced cryptography to highly complex network optimization.

The message for the broader telecommunications industry is clear: the AI era demands a thoughtful, strategic transformation. It's not about superficial AI adoption but about embedding intelligence into the very core of network design, operations, and service delivery. This requires a willingness to challenge legacy paradigms, invest in software-centric architectures, and cultivate an AI-literate workforce.

Rakuten Mobile's journey is a testament to what's possible when a clear vision for an AI-native telco is pursued with conviction. It's a journey of continuous learning, adaptation, and a profound belief in the power of technology to democratize access and enrich lives. As we move towards 6G and beyond, the telco's core identity will be defined not just by the speed of its pipes, but by the intelligence flowing through them.shaping a truly connected and collective future. The question is no longer if the industry will transform - it will. The question is who leads, and who participates in shaping that future. We believe that future is collaborative, intelligent, and fundamentally human-centric.

Most popular Open RAN network in the world What is the most popular Open RAN network in the world?

By Keith Dyer 11 November 2025

The answer may surprise you... oh OK, yes, the internet stopped doing this year ago - it's 1&1 in Germany.

Two years after launching mobile services on its  Open RAN network, German operator 1&1 said that it has completed the migration of all of its MVNO customers onto direct network service, meaning the operator now has over 12 million customers on the network, compared to just 700,000 in May 2024.

That number means that 1&1 now has the largest number of customers amongst the small number of operators globally that run solely on Open RAN networks. Rakuten Mobile, which launched in 2020 and which owns 1&1’s prime integrator and supplier Rakuten Symphony, had just over 9 million customers at the end of July 2025. Dish, now Boost Mobile, may have built a bigger network in geographical terms but it never formally disclosed customer numbers on-net vs MVNO customers and the company is now set to decommission its wireless network, following spectrum sales to Space X and a move to operate as a “hybrid operator” – meaning it will keep its own core network but offer access as an MVNO using AT&T’s network.

Rakuten owning 31 million AST-shares The Case for AST SpaceMobile

AST SpaceMobile has deployed its first five commercial satellites (dubbed Bluebird) in LEO, marking a key advancement in developing a space-based mobile network infrastructure. These satellites have the largest-ever commercial communications arrays spanning 693 square feet. They offer non-continuous service across the United States using more than 5,600 cells within the premium low-band spectrum. This achievement follows the success of the company's in-orbit BlueWalker 3 satellite, creating a space-based cellular broadband network that can directly link with mobile devices, eliminating the need for ground-based infrastructure. It plans to deploy 45 to 60 satellites into orbit by the first quarter of 2026. The company boasts a diverse portfolio of more than 3,650 patents and patent-pending claims worldwide for the direct-to-cell satellite ecosystem from space to Earth.

The SpaceMobile service is compatible with all major brands available in the market and connects directly to everyday mobile phones. It delivers broadband connectivity from space to unmodified mobile devices, providing a service to fill cellular coverage gaps in a differentiated approach compared to other space-based communication services. AST SpaceMobile has partnered with leading carriers such as AT&T Inc. T and Verizon Communications Inc. VZ to tap into a pre-existing pool of cell customers and raise funds to help build a worldwide satellite network. This has enhanced cellular coverage in the United States, essentially eliminating dead zones and empowering remote areas of the country with space-based connectivity.
