Telefonica Del Sur Expands Next Generation Network with Redback Networks' SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Router -
Back

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 26, 2006 – Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Telefonica del Sur (Telsur), the incumbent carrier in Chile’s southern region, has chosen Redback’s SmartEdge® Multi-Service Edge Router to expand its next generation network and power its business and residential services. Already a Redback customer for five years, Telsur plans to leverage the combination of edge routing, Ethernet aggregation and subscriber management to simplify their network, to expand capacity, and to decrease the time to market for new services. The upgraded Smart Broadband Network is designed to reduce capital and operational expenses.

“We needed a proven platform that could scale our next generation network and provide a smooth migration from ATM to Ethernet transport and advanced IP services,” said Iñaki Larraza, director of operations at Telsur. “The combination of edge routing and subscriber management should enable us to provide value-added services such as Self Enrollment, Tiered Bandwidth, and future services such as IPTV and fixed mobile convergence.”

According to Point-Topic, Chile is one of the top countries in broadband penetration in Latin America. With a subscriber growth rate of over 100% per year, ADSL has surpassed cable to become the leading broadband access technology in Chile during 2004. Large investments in telecommunications, a favorable regulatory environment, and e-government initiatives were all factors in Chile’s broadband growth.

“We're proud to have Telefonica del Sur as they join a larger population of Redback customers in Latin America. Redback is responding to the demand in Latin America by increasing sales and support throughout the region,” said John Spiliotis, vice president sales and operations for the Americas at Redback. “We look forward to mutual success for Telefonica del Sur and Redback as we address the demand for broadband services in Latin America.” The Smart Broadband Network provides a single, converged IP network infrastructure that can deliver voice, video and data services with a simplified architecture that reduces both capital and operational expenditures. A recent study by Yankee Group found that deploying a product with capabilities similar to the SmartEdge multi-service edge routers can reduce the total cost of ownership of a next generation network by over 20%, including the reduction of operations expense by over 50%.

Redback Networks erklimmt Rang Zwei im Bereich... ... Breitband-Internet!!!

29.08.2006 22:35:00 (BUSINESS WIRE)

edback Networks Inc.  (Nasdaq:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, has become the number two market leader in broadband internet service, passing Juniper Networks for the first time, according to a new report by Infonetics, a major industry research firm in Campbell, CA.

In its second quarter report for 2006, Infonetics reported that Redback's market share increased nine percentage points to 20 percent, rising to the second spot in the overall market. In the same report, Juniper's market share dropped 18 points to 19 percent overall, dropping to the third spot. Cisco Systems' market share dropped nine points to 36 percent, the top spot in the Infonetics report. The report compared results from second quarter of 2006 to the second quarter of 2005. For more details on this report, see www.infonetics.com.

"One of the three pillars for 'triple-play' services is broadband internet delivery. Redback is rising in the market place because it sees a future of fewer networks and more services, delivering a combination of high-speed Internet, VoIP and video-on-demand services," said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research, a major research firm in Campbell, CA.

"We believe this market study is an important validation for Redback's gains in the broader market category of multi-service routing," said Marco Wanders, chief marketing officer at Redback Networks. "On a worldwide basis, broadband carriers are moving rapidly toward a single integrated IP network for high-speed data, voice and video services. Carriers want to reduce the number of networks they are building and simplify their operations. Network economics no longer support new overlay networks for IP-based, triple-play services. Redback's SmartEdge(R) multi-service edge router helps carriers deliver multiple services over a single, integrated IP network."

Wanders said multi-service routing will eventually overtake other categories of single-service routing. "We see a future of fewer networks and more broadband services," said Wanders. "Over time, we believe that networks will get smarter, and all communications services will be managed in harmony under a single IP infrastructure."

Eleven of the top 20 DSL carriers worldwide deploy Redback's SmartEdge(R) multi-service edge router to deliver various broadband services to tens of millions of business and residential customers worldwide. These customers include British Telecom, Belgacom, Bell South, China Telecom, China Netcom, Chungwha Telecom, France Telecom and Turk Telecom, among others.

News Top, Kurs Flopp... ...

04.12.2006 09:00:00 (BUSINESS WIRE)

Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), a leading provider of multi-service edge routers for next generation IP networks, today announced that Opal Telecom, a subsidiary of The Carphone Warehouse (CPW), has chosen the SmartEdge(R) family of multi-service edge routers to help deliver the TalkTalk free broadband service for up to two million customers in the United Kingdom (U.K.).

TalkTalk is a communications company from The Carphone Warehouse and provides a combination of free broadband (up to 8 Mbps) and unlimited fixed-line phone calls. In October 2006, The Carphone Warehouse announced plans to acquire AOL UK's broadband operations, and the deal is expected to close in early 2007. The acquisition will make The Carphone Warehouse the third largest broadband provider in the U.K., with almost two million customers.

"Offering triple-play services is a compelling value for Internet users and has transformed the broadband market," said Magnus Almquist, vice president of sales & operations for Redback in Europe, Middle East and Africa. "It powerfully demonstrates that all communications can be delivered over a single broadband infrastructure and that over time carriers can use the power of Internet technology to converge communications and entertainment services. We are very pleased to be working with The Carphone Warehouse on this opportunity."

Clive Dorsman, chief technical officer of Opal Telecom, said: "Our strategy is to move quickly when we see new market opportunities. Being able to offer free broadband as part of a calling package provides The Carphone Warehouse with an opportunity to attract new customers, provide even better value to existing ones, whilst using the very profitable integrated service with a flexible IP infrastructure from Redback."

Redback's SmartEdge multi-service edge routers give network operators a graceful migration path to triple-play services, advanced business services such as unified communications and mobility services such as WiFi, WiMAX and mobile broadband networks. Redback uses a single system to manage data, voice and video services over next generation broadband networks. The platform is attractive to carriers because Redback uses a modular operating system and programmable processors that were specifically designed to manage different kinds of broadband IP services simultaneously. This flexible platform for multi-service networks give carriers higher levels of service consolidation, system availability, service scalability, and network mobility.

Twelve of the top 20 telephone carriers worldwide use SmartEdge routers for broadband, phone and TV services. Top carriers using SmartEdge include Belgacom, BellSouth, China Telecom, China Netcom, Chungwha Telecom (Taiwan), eAccess (Japan) France Telecom, Korea Telecom and Turk Telecom.
