SBC and Microsoft plan IP television service

NEW YORK, Nov 17- SBC Communications said on Wednesday that it reached a 10-year, $400 million deal with Microsoft Corp. to provide next-generation television services.
The Internet protocol-based TV service is to include features such as customizable channel lineups, video on demand, digital video recording, multimedia interactive program guides and content protection features.
SBC and Microsoft will begin field trials in mid-2005 and plan commercial availability in late 2005, according to a company statement.
The SBC-Microsoft deal is valued at more than $400 million over 10 years.

hi paro!
auf jeden Fall ein extrem wichtiges Marktsegement. Die Endgeräte sind aber noch eher Schrott.
Sowas wie der ipod fürs fernsehen, das wärs. Allerdings sind die derzeitigen Produkte und Ansätze eher schlecht. Ob's Microsoft schaffen wird, weiss ich nicht, aber vielleicht sollte Apple mal hand anlegen ;)

Finally Australia gets that HD movie on demand service that we have been so envious of, and possibly another nine-inch-nail in the coffin of video disc formats such as Blu-Ray?

“It’s going to be instant high def video, the instant you hit play it will play right then. Using multibit streaming it will scale to your broadband connection. It will be able to deliver the
quality of a 1080p 5.1 High def audio, pretty much
making Blu-Ray obsolete”
said Jenkins. “It’s delivered to your living room giving you access to heaps of movies, a complete library right there at a touch of a button”.
